“For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.” Romans 12:4-5
Every Sunday morning as we stand in Liturgy, we listen to our Fathers, the priests, say: “And He made us unto Himself an assembled people.” Ring a bell? I’m sure it does to many of us, but have we taken the time to understand what it means?
God has created all of us as relational beings. Through our shared knowledge and love for Christ, we are brought together and are called to grow in our relationship with Him through our connections with one another. In other words, we were never meant to achieve salvation alone… but rather leaning on and supporting each other to be clear reflections of Him.
One of my favorite memories growing up was completing puzzles. Every puzzle piece, different and unique, has its place and serves its purpose in the final picture. They connect and fit together in such a way to display a beautiful and complete image. Well… YOU are a puzzle piece, and so am I. Just as we enjoy putting together puzzles piece by piece, each person reflects a part of Christ’s image and His many graces. On our own, we may seem incomplete, but when we come together—each piece in its right place—we reveal the full and beautiful picture of Christ to the world and each other. As a community in fellowship, we shine and reflect the light of God. A lighthouse.
So, because we are the light of the world, we have been given a new commandment: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must also love one another.” John 13:34
Christ calls us to show His True Love to every person we come across. He commands us to look at His merciful and unfailing Love shown to us on the cross, and to go and give the same to others. As one body in Christ, we move and grow together, pointing one another to Him during our journeys here on earth.
Koinonia is a Greek word meaning “sharing together”. But what is it that we share? Life. Sharing our personal daily experiences and encounters with Christ with those we come across, encourages and uplifts us on our spiritual journeys. As a community of believers, we strengthen one another! Sometimes we need people in our lives to steer our focus back to Him, nudge us with a smile, and remind us constantly that He’s always with us.
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.” Ecclesiastes 4:9
Lord, help us to be constant reflections of your light and love. To find purpose in fellowship, to be intentional in every interaction with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us love deeply, serve joyfully, and walk together in unity.
“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
Psalm 133:1
